Magnet Design Services
Albion Systems can supply turnkey designs for electromagnets, for any application, including ion optical elements (dipoles, quadrupoles, sextupoles, and other configurations), motors, actuators and sensors. If desired we can take full responsibility for supplying the completed magnet,  including vacuum, power supplies, software and and verifying the performance.

Expensive modeling software tools alone do not guarantee a successful design for a magnetic element in a complex ion beam system. They are inappropriate for designing the correct underlying optics, but they are excellent for optimizing a good concept. Finite-element models of the complete magnet  can verify effective use of the magnetic path, avoid saturation problems, and by using ray-tracing can verify correct ion-optical operation.

Albion Systems uses a full suite of magnetic design tools, some developed in-house and verified over years of successful designs, and others available only at substantial cost.  This approach is fast, accurate, cost-effective, and very successful. Solid modeling, in conjunction with Vector Fields Opera, Tosca, is used for cost-effective production designs.

Albion Systems designs can start from your existing design, or from a functional specification. Communicaton with the client can be via solid model or 2D drawing, but the most accurate translation from magnetic design to physical reality is achieved using a common solid model.

The typical design proces is as follows:
If working an a new design, the process begins with a first-order model, using OPTICIAN.
Second-order aberrations can be corrected using TRANSPORT.
Proprietary software tools may be used generate a first-estimate model of the pole shape.
Proprietary tools then generate a coil of suitable shape.
A solid model is generated using a mechanical 3D CAD system.
Vector Fields' OPERA and TOSCA take the model and predict fields and trajectories.
A smart iterative process is utilized to optimize the beam shape, weight,power density, saturation, etc.

Hundreds of magnets made to related designs using our design tools are in use in ion implanters, providing a solid database demonstrating outstanding reliability and consistency over fifteen years.

 I can design using tape-wound coil with conservative current densities operating at temperatures below 50 C, when appropriate.
3-dimensional coils can require hollow conductor, and I can design coils and tooling, and assist with protopype construction.
Designs can be optimized to minimize power, or minimize size.
